International Volunteer Day is Tuesday, December 5, celebrating solidarity through volunteering. The day focuses on driving positive change through volunteering. With an inspired focus on giving back, Group 1001 is always actively seeking to contribute to the communities in which we operate. Our priority is to have a positive, lasting impact for decades to come.
To celebrate International Volunteer Day, we’re shining a light on several employees who volunteer throughout the year, giving their time and talents to those in their communities.
Michael Takacs, Vice President, Marketing
Mike is a coach and board member for Bridgewater's Youth Soccer Association. His responsibilities encompass driving soccer initiatives, coordinating fundraising efforts, and overseeing administrative tasks. He dedicates five to 10 hours a week.
“Volunteering is a choice deeply rooted in my lifelong connection to soccer and a desire to give back to the community. Witnessing the growth and success of the kids and the program is immensely rewarding. The privilege of supporting my own children and their friends in their soccer journeys adds a personal dimension to my commitment, making the time invested a labor of love.”
Jessica Maginn, Marketing Communications Coordinator, Indy Women in Tech
Jessica is a Big Sister for Big Sisters Big Brothers of Central Indiana. Her role is to mentor - teaching, helping, guiding, or presenting opportunities for growth and learning. She spends four to six hours a month with her Little Sister.
“I wanted to be a small, but impactful part of someone's life, as well as a role model and guide for girls. My favorite part is my Little. She is kind and timid at first, but also ambitious, curious, open-minded, and intelligent. She is fun, has great ideas, and has an amazing heart. My favorite part is getting to know her better the more we spend time together. If you have time in your schedule and feel you have a bit of guidance to offer, I highly recommend becoming a Big.”
Glenn Cottrell, Vice President, Property and Casualty Claims
Glenn and his wife volunteer with the Adopt a Class TN program. They help out at a local elementary school for five to 10 hours per month with workbook projects.
“Our youngest daughter is a teacher, and we know how much it means to have others provide additional help. Giving back has always been important to us, knowing we help make a difference.”
Megan Weaver, Associate Director, Agency Administration
In the past, Megan routinely volunteered in her community but admits life got busy and pulled her away from volunteering. That changed this summer after helping to coordinate the Group 1001 Hours of Impact campaign. She participated in the Habitat for Humanity women build, Gleaners Food Bank pantry drive-thru Arsenal Tech gym rebuild, and organized Caffeinated Compassion presentations for the Zionsville office.
“Being a part of 1001 Hours of Impact reminded me of how vitally important volunteering is to our community and how truly nourishing it is to my soul.”
This shift in perspective inspired Megan to sign up to become a Big Sister after attending a presentation by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana. She is looking forward to being matched with a “Little” by the end of the year. “I am excited to become a Big Sister and be given the opportunity to help inspire and encourage a Little to see the BIG potential that lies within each and every one of us!”
Thank you to our employees who are making an incredible impact in their communities through volunteering.
