Group 1001 Supports Gleaners’ Fresh Connect Central – Protein Donations for Families
Partner Spotlight: Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana
Our non-profit partner, Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana, has developed programs and formed partnerships designed to lead the fight against hunger in central Indiana since 1980. Gleaners is the largest hunger-relief organization in Indiana.
As one of 200-member food banks in the Feeding America Network, Gleaners provides nutritious food to roughly one-third of the food-insecure population in Indiana through mobile pantries, home delivery, Gleaners2Go, and an on-site food pantry. It also serves as a wholesale distributor through a network of more than 300 food pantries, soup kitchens, schools, and community partners throughout its 21-county service area.
Group 1001’s partnership supports Fresh Connect Central, Gleaners’ social enterprise sourcing and distribution subsidiary. Through relationships made during the 2022 and 2023 racing seasons, Gleaners and Fresh Connect Central were able to make valuable connections with food processors, particularly in protein. As a result, Gleaners was able to process more than 1 million pounds of fresh protein in its USDA-certified protein repack room in the first year of operation. Gleaners is the only food bank in the country with the ability to process large quantities of fresh protein donations and repack them into household-size portions.
“Over the last three years, Group 1001 has afforded Gleaners the opportunity to expand awareness of food insecurity in Indiana and beyond, as well as offer the public tangible ways to become involved in the fight against hunger,” said Fred Glass, Gleaners President and CEO. “We’ve been able to build relationships with food donors resulting in 1 million pounds of protein processed in year one of our USDA-certified protein repack room. We’ve engaged with high-profile athletes who have amplified our message with their followers. Most recently, Group 1001 employees spent two full days in our warehouse, serving neighbors in our drive-thru distribution, and packing boxes for home delivery. Multi-faceted partnerships focused on donations of food and funds, awareness, volunteerism, and advocacy are critical to our mission.”
The partnership between Group 1001 and Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana is mutually beneficial. Group 1001 employees are rewarded by giving back to the community while Gleaners fulfills its mission to fight hunger. Group 1001 is proud to support this worthy cause.
