Transformative Two-Day Volunteer Project Creates Safe and Resourceful Learning Spaces
Indianapolis, IN (July 21, 2023) – Employees from Group 1001, in collaboration with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, concluded a successful two-day volunteer project at Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis, resulting in significant improvements and renovations to the school's fitness, athletic, culinary, and creative learning spaces.
Originally built as a U.S. Civil War Arsenal, the campus became a public high school in 1912. The school was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Arsenal Tech is a member of Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS).
The enhancement project is made possible through the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation (CRSF) five-year, $5M partnership with Indianapolis-based Group 1001. The gift, provided by Group 1001 in 2022, supports the foundation’s initiative to assist underserved communities across the country. Of the school’s 2,000+ student body, minority enrollment is 91% and 69% of students are economically disadvantaged.
The Arsenal Tech renovation project kicks off Group 1001's new community service program – 1001 Hours of Impact. The initiative empowers employees to give back to their communities across the country, resulting in 1001 hours of volunteer support.
Throughout the project, which took place on Wednesday, July 19, and Thursday, July 20, at Arsenal Tech High School's campus, volunteers worked tirelessly to revamp various areas of the school. On Project Day, volunteers renovated the main fitness space and upgraded the athletic locker rooms. The following day, volunteers continued their efforts by constructing the culinary arts area and engaging in healthy meal prep activities. The two-day project culminated with a celebration meal, marking the successful completion of the transformative renovations.
Steve Salem, President and CEO of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, expressed his appreciation for the partnership between CRSF and Group 1001. "The collaboration between the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation and Group 1001 has been truly inspiring. Together, we have been able to create an environment that fosters growth, opportunity, and a brighter future for the students at Arsenal Tech High School," Salem said.
Dan Towriss, President and CEO of Group 1001, added, "At Group 1001, we are deeply committed to making a positive impact in the communities where we live and work. Through our partnership with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, we are honored to have contributed to the revitalization of Arsenal Tech High School, providing students with enhanced facilities that will empower their educational journey."
JR Shelt, Principal of Arsenal Tech High School, said, "We are immensely grateful for the support of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation and Group 1001. The enhanced facilities will undoubtedly inspire our students to excel academically and athletically, creating a positive learning environment for all."
The administration and staff at Arsenal Tech High School, as well as representatives from Indianapolis Public Schools, also shared their admiration for the volunteer efforts and the lasting impact these renovations will have on the school community. Representatives from Group 1001 were instrumental in the successful execution of the project and their dedication to empowering education is commendable.
